Mobilising Private Capital for Ireland’s Sustainable Infrastructure Needs

May 2, 2018 @ 8:15 am - 12:15 pm

Supported by the Department of Finance under the IFS 2020 Strategy Action Plan 2018, Sustainable Nation Ireland is delighted to bring together key stakeholders to discuss the role of private capital in meeting Ireland’s decarbonisation targets and sustainable infrastructure investment needs.

Mobilising private capital investment in sustainable infrastructure is a hot topic globally and the purpose of this event is to highlight the opportunity for Ireland to secure international and local capital to finance its own needs. We look forward to hearing Deloitte’s insights regarding the opportunity for private capital investment  to meet the investment gap between Government commitments under the National Development Plan 2018-2027 and the estimated overall investment required to meet our 2030 decarbonisation targets.

Expert speakers on two panels will then offer their perspectives. We will first hear from international investors and lenders with regard to their sector’s needs from an investment decision making perspective. We will then hear from investors who have already invested locally in Irish sustainable infrastructure on their experience.

This event is timely and we look forward to constructive debates on how Ireland can position itself best to accelerate capital deployment in low-carbon infrastructure.

Who will attend

Ireland’s sustainable infrastructure requirements will cut across a number of sectors, including energy generation and storage, heat, transport, waste, water, forestry and buildings. Those attending the event include policy makers, international and local investors and investment managers, lenders, corporate finance advisers, professional services and sustainable infrastructure project developers.

Investment in infrastructure is widely recognized as crucial to promoting economic and social growth through the development of essential services and assets. And as the global population grows and urbanizes, the demand for infrastructure grows with it. To be in line with the Paris Climate Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, tomorrow’s infrastructure must focus on projects that are sustainable, low-carbon and climate resilient. This applies across all sectors with infrastructure needs.

The National Development Plan 2018-2027 demonstrates the Government’s commitment to meeting Ireland’s infrastructure and investment needs over the next 10 years, through a total investment estimated at €116 billion over this period. This includes a significant investment in sustainable infrastructure.

However, it is well recognised globally that public finance alone will not deliver the transition to the low carbon, resource efficient and circular economy that the world must achieve. Private capital, working for sustainability, will be key to filling the investment gap. We in Sustainable Nation recognise this and, as a result, a key objective of our initiative Finance Green Ireland is to accelerate and mobilise the deployment of private capital for the benefit of Ireland. This event is an output of Finance Green Ireland.
